Introducing MPATAMANGA: A Story Twenty Years in the Making

Some books take months to write. Others take decades to live.

I am delighted to announce the release of my second book, MPATAMANGA: My Twenty-Year Fight for Africa’s Wild Places.

Following the success of Memoirs of a Real Crocodile Hunter, which recounted my years as a licensed crocodile hunter protecting communities from dangerous crocodiles in Malawi, MPATAMANGA tells the parallel story of another lifelong passion—conservation.

For more than twenty years, I dedicated myself to protecting a remarkable stretch of wilderness along the spectacular Mpatamanga Gorge on the Shire River in southern Malawi. Without government funding, NGO support or wealthy backers, I established and managed Mpatamanga Wildlife Ranch, driven by a belief that one person could make a lasting difference.

Over two decades, the ranch became a refuge for more than 500,000 indigenous trees, diverse wildlife and one of Malawi’s most beautiful natural landscapes.

But conservation is rarely straightforward.

MPATAMANGA takes readers behind the scenes of life on the ranch—from confronting poachers and managing wildfires to uncovering ancient archaeological discoveries and working alongside local communities. It also tells the story of the unexpected challenges that threatened everything I had spent twenty years building.

This is not simply a book about wildlife. It is about vision, determination and the belief that conservation begins with action, even when you stand alone.
